Almuñécar is a municipality located in the southwestern part of the Costa Tropical region of Granada, in the autonomous community of Andalusia. It lies on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea and borders the Granada municipalities of Otívar, Jete, Ítrabo, and Salobreña, and the Málaga municipality of Nerja. The municipality of Almuñécar comprises the towns of Almuñécar and La Herradura. La Herradura is located six kilometers from the town of Almuñécar, situated at one end of the Jate River valley, which separates it from the Maro-Cerro Gordo Cliffs Natural Area. It is an important tourist center, nestled between the sea and the mountains. It is also known as a major producer of subtropical fruits such as avocados, cherimoyas, mangoes, and loquats. It is located 76 kilometers from the city of Granada and 77 kilometers from the city of Málaga.
